On the 6th instant being St Berthane Day , Sir Brianne Alderidge did cause 'sweete martiale musick' to be sounded in the streets of Borchester to recruit men for the 'Trained Companyes' in support of the Kinge .
However he and his party are accosted by 'Ranting' Josiah Grundy' - who objects to 'musick' of any kind - especially in support of 'The Greate Malignante'
He is dragged away under escort by Sir Brianne's gamekeeper 'Thomas Forreste' and exhibited till dusk in the market place stocks . The above picture comes from the 'Borchester Mercurial' the local broadsheet that dates back to 1600 . I was lucky enough to be able to view the origanal copy in the Felpersham University reading rooms *, having a much sort after readers ticket and will try to track forthcoming events using these original documents .
*I must point out that these illustrations are used with the permission of the University of Felphersham Archive Dept.
Ranting Josiah would be turning in his grave if he knew of how some of his descendants turned out.
ReplyDeleteYes his Grt grt grt etc Grandson is a 'character'
DeleteThis is great stuff! The contemporary broadsheets are a terrific find as well - the University is to be complimented on their collections.
ReplyDeleteYes I'm lucky to have access to them .
DeleteBeeyootiful shiny figures, and some striking colour choices too.
ReplyDeleteI like to keep things bright and cheerful (not to bothered about historical - which can be a bit drab)
DeleteWonderful painting, well done! You cannot beat original documents in the recording of "history!"
ReplyDeleteYes I do like to go back to the original documents when I can .
DeleteBeing put in the stocks on a chilly day probably brought on his 'Farmers Lung'. Alderidge may live to regret it!
ReplyDeleteI suspect they will , and all that ranting won't help with his breathing either .
DeleteMarvellous how you put those beautifully painted figures into a tale of bravado. Wonderful stuff!
ReplyDeleteRegards, James
Thanks , they paint up very quickly I'm going for the 'toy soldier' high gloss look .
DeleteAnother delve into the archives soon please. Splendid research work and fantastic figures.
ReplyDeleteBusy painting figures or the first scenario .
DeleteI trust ye eternally olde Walter Gabriel who was even then a young boy at the time of ye UnCivil Warres would chuckle and say, "me old pal, me old beauty" ...
