Been playing around with the Featherston "Close War" rules and slightly adapted them for the earlier period and the first clashes between the Natives and Settlers/Explorers in the early 17th cent.. I have made the Matchlock Muskets more powerful (the Indians couldn't wait to get their hands on them) but slower to use than bows and allowed for the armour worn by the Europeans . Very much a work in progress - no morale yet - perhaps Natives retire when they loose 33% of their force and the Europeans 50% ? (click on photo to enlarge)
Looks perfect for your "Flint and Feather" figures Tony! The woodcut at the top of your picture depicts a battle from the Pequot War 1634-1638.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to trying them out very much a work in progress.
DeleteMy own adaptations: Bowmen can move a half move and fire. Targets get a save of 6 on a D6 from bows and also a plus one save if firer moved.
ReplyDeleteAmerican woodland and plains Indians get a bonus of plus one if they attack from cover or in cover. However, they will not attack close formed troops unless attacking in cover, from cover, rear or flank attack or target is seriously reduced in numbers..
Interesting adaptions , will bear them in mind .
Delete1-page rules? I like that!
ReplyDeleteMy idea of the perfect rule set.
