The winds of change ?

I have for a while been thinking about a reorganisation of my wargaming room , this might involve downsizing my 8' X 5 ' table down to a 6' X 4'  this would allow more room for the player to move around the table peripheral and generally tidy up the room .

As a test run I have set up an old favorite on a reduced size table , this being of course the N.W.F. using The Sword And The Flame . A mixed force of Afghan tribesmen , Regulars and a sneaky unit of Russians versus 2 units of Imperial Infantry , Gurkhas and Bengal Lancers . The figures off table have to come on as reinforcements as the game progresses .

Two companies of the Borchesters prepare to advance against the Russian held village , I will report back how the games is going and can I cope with a smaller table .

  1. Nice! Reminds me of my latent thoughts about Colonial wargaming with a touch of the Great Game too.

    1. Interesting to see if there is enough room for a game .

  3. Tony, I'm wargaming with 54mm these days, despite the scale, my 6'x6' is fine for larger actions, and 4'x6' is fine for skirmish games. Anything else in a scenario can be kept on a map or diced for, and it also saves my back!

    1. Yes being short even a 5' wide table is a stretch .

  4. I am sure The Empire is in safe hands even with those pesky Russians.

    Good looking layout.

  5. Your terrain is excellent Tony! It really gives that NWF feel! Keep an eye on those Russians, they ARE very sneaky!

  6. I do think that this set up is full of character. Looks to me like a smaller table might work well for your needs.

  7. I made a conscious decision to have a 6x4 table in my wargaming room rather than the largest possible table possible. It gives me a more pleasant room to spend time in. Since I use mainly house rules, my rules are adapted to the table size, rather than the other way around.

    1. My room at the moment is rather cramped , so a smaller table would make sense .

  8. Occasionally I miss my 6x8 table, usually lasts several seconds. It has gradually shrunk in stages to 5x4 and to my dismay, I am enjoying it more. I can reach well over 1/2 way across it so less running around, it covers the action with reserves etc being off table rather than creeping across, eadier to set up, quicker to play. As a result: more games more often and to my shock and chagrin I enjoy them as much or more.

  9. I'm happy with my 6'x 4' table mainly because I can easily reach to the centre but also aesthetically it leaves more space in the room for my painting desk etc. Also, I think 6'x 4' is probably more old school!

  10. I've got a 6x4 and I find it ample for piling stuff up on and gathering dust. I'm sure you'll find it adequate, and like you say, a nicer room to be in.

  11. The table (still) looks great with such lovely terrain and figures.
Have you considered, rather than reduce the table dimensions, putting the players on a diet!! :)

    1. This player is meant to be on a diet ! , yes removing the surrounding clutter and storing everything under the table is another option .
