I've been thinking ! * I have SYW both in 30mm Spencer Smith and 40mm Prince August home-casts both designed for play Old School battles , the reason for this is that I started doing SYW with the 30mm Spencer Smith using Grant's rules and then discovered the thrill of home-casting 40mm .
Off late I have been thinking this is a bit of an over-kill and started wondering about turning one of these collections into more main stream gaming using 'Black Powder' rules which I enjoy playing in other eras and collections .
The problem is which one ? , I can see that both ranges have their advantages and disadvantages - I would turn each Infantry Battalion into 2 Battalions on five bases for BP and the Cavalry into half Regiments .
There would be enough figures in each existing organisation to do this with maybe extra Standard Bearers needed . It would mean re basing (shock horror !) , but the 30mm are based on pennies and you can get sabot bases in MDF for them to fit into , the 40mm are mainly on bases of 6 figures which would mean more work however I could easily cast up any extra figures myself . Hmmm ! I need to take the dog for a walk to think about this .
* when I was at work and somebody said " I've been thinking" my work mate Arty Buchanan used to say - " you are more likely to get into trouble thinking than not thinking"
Decisions, decisions...
ReplyDeleteI know , giving it a coat of looking at
ReplyDeleteFlip a coin? Then best of five?
ReplyDeleteIt's all down to which will be easiest and cost the least
DeleteIsn't BP written to handle any basing and number of figures per battalion as long as you agree with your self? Its not like you remove casualties.
ReplyDeleteYes any changes would be purely cosmetic , was planning to change the French infantry Regiments into two Battalions for BP , this would involve casting a few more command figures up .
DeleteAs long as you keep the bases glossy..... I wish I had an acquaintance called Arty Buchanan, it is name with a certain ring to it.
ReplyDeleteYes the new organisation will be glossy and hopefully dual purpose . Arty (Arthur) Buchanan is VERY much a character .
DeleteWhich Scale...30mm OR 40mm? I sympathize with you- both are great scales....I'm guessing it may all come down to the completeness of Armies you may wish to ultimatey field for games -and which one costs the least to do....decisions.
ReplyDeleteIf I went 40mm any extra figures could be cast up by myself , so 40mm is looking more popular at the moment .
DeleteThe duplication problem. I have 28mm and 40mm for SYW period.
ReplyDeleteAfter not thinking about it for a long time I’ve decided to keep both, but to rework the 40mm into a special context of a border war against a more ‘exotic’ army using a Charge like organisation. This means I can add my own home-cast sculpted figures, as needed; plus some cast from Creartec moulds.
I'm thinking of using the 40mm dual purpose - O.S./B.P. with minimum re-basing needed and the odd figure cast up so I can do both
DeleteSpencer Smith's are the most vintage range, Tony, so perhaps best kept for the vintage games? Just a thought.
ReplyDeleteThinking it will be easiest to use the 40mm range as I can cast up any extra figures I need myself,
DeleteI agree. Keep the Spencer Smith's for vintage games and do your own thing with the 40mm.
DeleteIf you want any of the old Karoliners I have a lot cast which you can have for the postage. And some of the new heads if you want them?
ReplyDeleteSteve
Thanks for the offer , will have to see what I need when I get organised properly , Tony
