I've got around to sorting out the six mounted figures I bought and here they are resplendent in the sunshine.
I didn't repaint them , just touched up any damage - which there wasn't much and gave them another coat of gloss varnish.
I had to think of a way to add bases to them as they fall over very easily on 'the Tabletop of Mars' . I've tried several different methods , none of which were a success - then I hit on this idea , which I call the 'Carousel' method - I drilled a hole in the stomach of the horse and fitted a cocktail stick , then I drilled a hole in a sutable base which the stick is glued into . It seems to be working so far .
This chap has a rather purple face - to many ports maybe ?
Another view of the 'Carousel' method of basing .
This figure is I think a modern recast as he is solid metal - had to use a bigger base to fit the horse . Someone has taken a lot of trouble adding the flowing feathers to his Topee from thin pieces of metal foil !. These figures will be appearing in various guises of command in the future on 'The Tabletop of Mars'

They are full of character.
ReplyDeleteYes each has his own one i think.
DeleteThey all look great Tony, especially with the gloss finish! I like your basing solution, they look very stable. I can't wait to see them on your table!
ReplyDeleteA gloss varnish always helps , I hope the basing works as on the tabletop the fall over with monotonous regularity.
DeleteThey have turned out really well and look ready to take part in some table top battles. Your solution to unstable basing is inspired ad works really well.
ReplyDeleteDon't like drilling into old figures, but if needs be the hole can be filled in again.
DeleteLovely! The merry-go-round is a good and traditional approach for stability.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't bring myself to do it with non-glossy, shaded, painting, so I drilled tiny holes in the bottom of 1 or 2 hooves and inserted wire pegs then drilled holes in the bases I cut and glued them in.
Not as classic looking as yours but mine also no longer fall over like bowling pins.
Never thoght of that idea , but therse old figures do need basing .
DeleteWonderful additions. I did a similar merry go round stalk as a solution to mounting my toy knights for my jousting game. Had my reservations ahead of time, but once done, looks fine (just as yours do!).
ReplyDeleteI've tried other methods but not with much success .
