Found on Facebook and for the life in me I can't remember which of the many Toy Soldier/ Homecasting groups it was from !?. Noticed a date of 1923 on it - an era when children were impervious to hot metal ! (click on photos to enlarge)
AND it builds patriotism !!!!

DeleteThey look very much like the Schneider molds from Germany. My mother, who was born in 1928, tells me stories about casting toy soldiers when she was a youngster! She has never mentioned any problems related to this pastime! It was a very different era indeed Tony!

DeleteYes, mostly Schneider molds...There is a book available on Amazon about the Schneider molds and their German derivatives, with text in German and English. It doesn't cover what American companies did with them, though, or whether what they sold were imported, licensed, or just pirated (probably some of each).

DeleteFascinating to read the business model and the company buying back the painted castings - explains the varied nature of painted examples - I wonder how many made a living from these in the States in the 20s and 30s?
ReplyDeleteIt's a very American idea , pity the molds aren't available nowadays .
DeleteUntil I zoomed in, I was shocked that the child in the last photo was pouring molten lead into a mold while standing precariously on a chair (i really should wear my glasses). That's what i thought the "impervious to hot metals" was about!
