This photo of H.G. Wells was was posted on 'A Gentleman's War' Facebook page , I've never seen it before , I wonder if it was linked with the publication of 'Little Wars' ?
Good find - I have only seen this fleetingly once whilst researching the background of Little Wars last year - it's (still copyrighted?) from the Illustrated London News / Mary Evans Picture Archive Ltd. The caption suggests it is 1915 date, which seems a little odd in view of what was happening in WW1 (doesn't say early or late 1915) and what he was involved in, as in late 1914 / early 1915 Little Wars was still being advertised in amongst war books, according to: https://fantastic-writers-and-the-great-war.com/war-experiences/h-g-wells/ It seems an odd kind of shot, with doors or handles in the background. This is the image link: https://www.mediastorehouse.co.uk/mary-evans-prints-online/h-g-wells-war-game-ww1-14155774.html
There is more Wells material on this Mary Evans site that I have not seen such as this 1931 caricature https://www.mediastorehouse.co.uk/mary-evans-prints-online/new-images-august-2021/h-g-wells-autori-23273412.html
I'm going to suggest your picture was taken at the same time, maybe even the same event as this one.. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/52/HG_Wells_playing_to_Little_Wars.jpg/1280px-HG_Wells_playing_to_Little_Wars.jpg as that curl he has on his forehead doesn't appear in any other picture I've seen of him, and the suit/tie/shirt collar combo is identical... but that's just me guessing that both were taken in 1913 at the release of Little Wars...
That is a new one Tony! It does look very much like a "publicity shot." Thanks for another great find!
ReplyDeleteA good catch.
