A sign of Spring.

A sign of Spring,  this Red Admiral butterfly (?) has been hibernating in our kitchen since last year and today in response to the warmer weather has awoken,  it has been released into the wild.

  1. A small tortoiseshell I believe - very pretty and quite common when I was a kid but I've not seen one for ages now.

  2. That's lovely - it's in very good shape. We have some species of big loony moths which insist on hibernating in our log shed, and every winter hundreds of them freeze to death, poor things. I once had a mass of lacewings which crammed into my old electric doorbell one winter, and they all perished - I only found them when the doorbell wouldn't work, because it was stuffed with dead lacewings. Hmmm.

    1. This on had the sense to hibernate in the kitchen above the cooker , luckily I got to it first before the cat did and released it.

  3. A beautiful sign indeed Tony! We have had a relatively mild winter here in the Adirondacks so far, but that could change quickly! We often still have some snow into May!
