A glimpse from the past .

Found on Facebook were it is doing the rounds , from an era when boys (and perhaps the better sort of girls) were encouraged to mess about with molten metal - I notice he has had the foresight to use a tray under the melting pot , but the lack of PPE is alarming!

  1. It looks like it might be an ad from AC Gilbert, judging from the mold products shown. Some goggles and gloves would definitely be a good idea, but the vapor pressure of the metal is not too significant, so you wouldn’t need to worry about breathing as long as you had some reasonable ventilation. Having played a lot with molds, I will say “dozens” is unnecessarily pessimistic. There’s no reason why one shouldn’t dream of hundreds of soldiers.

  2. Another great find Tony! My mother was born in 1928, and she told me about how she and her sister loved to cast toy soldiers when they were 10-12 years old! I would not be surprised if this was the set that they used!

    1. That's very interesting, they were to quote H G Wells "that more intelligent sort of girls who likes boys games and books" .

  3. No PPE, but a smart dress shirt...another era, indeed.
