I came across this on 'Warfare in the Age of Steam' blog (Warfare in the Age of Steam: 1899 Illustration by Frederick de Haenen, called "Le Jeu Des Soldats De Plomb. - Reconstitution par un amateur de la bataille d'Austerlitz." (1815-1918.blogspot.com). Whilst looking at it my wife said "Is that a photo of you and your little men ?"- it does bear a resemblance to me - when my beard and hair were darker and less grey .
Come on! - we know it's you really. In fact it looks more like an 1805 photo of a giant on the real battlefield. Which suggests it's maybe a diorama. Boringly, I'm (very) interested in this picture, but for rather nerdy reasons:
ReplyDelete(1) what scale of figures do you reckon these are?
(2) what is he wearing? - it looks like some kind of apron or overall - do you think I should get one?
Would think it's a diorama and the date would suggest flats (?) , think it's an apron - something my wife remarks I need when she surveys another tee shirt with paint on it .
ReplyDeleteAnother great picture Tony! I've seen other pictures of huge dioramas made with flat figures and wondered how they did it so precisely! This is one explanation!
ReplyDeleteIt's a rather odd and interesting picture , is the base made from canvas sheeting ?
DeleteDid you often wear an apron in those eary days?
ReplyDeleteI think those may actually be French 54's mixed in with flats and others.
Great pic!
Sadly when I should of worn an apron I didn't .
