Popped into town today to get my eyes tested and I had look into 'This n That', a shop that seems to sell off house clearance items . In a box of model railway bits and pieces I found the above figure - he's a 54mm hollowcast Johillco (?) Hiker, rather battered with a good bit of paint loss . I paid £3 for him- cheap! - the figure goes for far more than that on Ebay . I have bought the odd figure from this shop when I see them, mainly Agustini collectables which go for a song, so I'm pleased with this find .
On BBC Catch Up at the moment , Johnnie Walker - 'Walking the Great Patio' a series of programs which does touch on The Great Patio War' at times .
Congratulations on a good find, I am sure he will feature in future tabletop adventures once suitably repainted!

DeleteFor me the temptation to restore some old glory in a decent paintjob would be too much. It depends if you want to keep it purely as a collectible or as a decent looking figure. Ironically, even a nice paintjob will devalue it in monetary terms but not less than what you picked the figure up for.

DeleteTony, thats a lovely find, well spotted. Concerning repainting. Yes, my view has now changed. It is better to paint strip, repair, and then give them a quality paint job. Forget collector's values, they won't hold and will likely collapse in the near future, just as it has already with stamp collections, a massive drop from the 1970s. Its all to do with Demographics. So, these figures will only survive if they are still attractive to future generations, and their prices will still drop. Concerning coin collecting, its the precious metal content that has seen any real increases. Anyhow, as a wargamer, I want my collection to look good on the table. Hope this doesn't appear negative.

No I agree , I have repainted most of my collection, occasionally I leave one untouched often for sentimental reasons . It's interesting about stamp collecting - something I know nothing about . I find prices for odd figures vary dramatically , from the cheap to the ridiculous - you just have to keep your eyes open for the bargains .
