I found this postcard advertised on eBay several weeks ago , it's obviously a young German girl wearing a picklehelm . On the table there is a large model cannon and some largish toy soldiers which are partially hidden and I'm afraid I can't make them out . The drum also looks very Prussian so probably from the turn of the century (1900ish ?) .There is some writting and print on the bottom - could it be Gretha ? and I wonder is Amst is short for Amsterdam ? - a mystery ......

Tony. Perhaps not a girl. Before 1900 the wealthy classes often dressed very young boys in 'dresses' rather than breeches. Probably to save wear and tear on the knees. The colour might also have given a clue as in Victorian England pink was for boys, pale blue for girls. Strange times, but not as strange as the present.

Yes that's true, I'd forget about that
Delete'Uitgave' means 'published' in Dutch, so you may be right about Amsterdam.
ReplyDeleteAh ! thanks for that info .
DeleteAnother great find Tony! This child is ready for anything, but probably just wants to play with all of the wonderful toys in this picture!
ReplyDeleteYes I wonder if they were allowed to ?
